Imports from another EU country is always exempt from import duties. There is also an exemption for shipments from outside the EU if the value is less than \u20ac150. So far it sounds simple and clear, but we are not that&#8217;s not all. Let&#8217;s dive a little deeper into the import duties file.<\/p>\n<h2><b>How do you determine the amount of import duties?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>The customs of almost all countries in the world work with uniform codes to divide goods into groups. The so-called HS code (Harmonized System) consists of 6 digits. This series of numbers is supplemented with 4 digits from a national system of the country of origin. The 10-digit code now formed is called a tariff or commodity code (commodity code). Import tax is linked to the commodity code of a product. The Tax and Customs Administration knows which products are involved and how much import duties you have to pay for the import shipment.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Exceptions: pay less or no import duties<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>In some cases you do not have to pay import duties on goods imported outside the EU.\u00a0This applies to categories such as books, laptops, telephones and cosmetics and care products.\u00a0You can also request an exemption from import duties if you can prove that the products or raw materials are scarce in the EU.\u00a0The application process takes a long time and if it is granted, the exemption has limited validity.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rijksoverheid.nl\/onderwerpen\/internationaal-ondernemen\/vraag-en-antwoord\/kan-ik-importeren-zonder-invoerrechten-te-betalen\">Read<\/a>\u00a0more information here.<\/p>\n<p>It is more likely that you are doing business with producers located in countries with which the EU has a &#8216;preferential trade agreement&#8217;.\u00a0The EU forms a trading block with these countries that cooperates in international trade.\u00a0The goods which, as it is called, are of preferential origin must have been wholly processed in and shipped from that country.\u00a0To prove this you need an origin declaration, also called EUR.1 certificate, invoice declaration or certificate of origin.\u00a0Import duties expire or become much lower upon import.<\/p>\n<p>Important countries with which the EU has a trade agreement: Canada, Japan, Turkey, South Korea, Israel, Morocco, Tunisia and the Central American countries.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kvk.nl\/download\/Factsheet_Overeenkomstlanden_EU_tcm109-421804.pdf\">See the full list here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Notable countries with which there is no trade agreement are China and the United States.\u00a0For import from these countries, the general import duty must therefore be paid.<\/p>\n<h2><b>A calculation example<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Suppose you want to import clothing from China.\u00a0In this example we assume 1000 kg of shirts with a total value of \u20ac 10,000.\u00a0The customs duty for third countries (outside the EU) is 12%.\u00a0So you pay \u20ac 1200 for import duty.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tarief.douane.nl\/arctictariff-public-web\/#!\/home\">Here you can consult the calculation tool of the tax authorities yourself<\/a>\u00a0.<\/p>\n<p>Import duties range from 0 to 17%.
